Key findings

  1. 4 of 8 countries publish a comparable price. The lowest is Japan at £1,230; the highest published figure is £7,760, before travel.
  2. From the UK, 4 of 4 countries are cheaper than a private IVF cycle at home before travel, and 2 after an example flight and 14 hotel nights. The lowest UK self-pay price we found is £3,800.
  3. No official waiting-time figure is published for this in the UK, Canada or Ireland that we could use; it is mostly bought privately.
  4. No verified comparable price in Mexico, Hungary, South Korea and China. A gap means we could not find a price the provider publishes itself, not that the treatment is unavailable.

What an IVF cycle is

In IVF, hormone injections stimulate the ovaries, the eggs are collected in a short procedure, fertilised in the laboratory, and an embryo is transferred to the womb a few days later. ICSI injects a single sperm into each egg. Clinic prices often leave out the medicines, which can cost as much as the cycle, and extras such as freezing embryos. Rules on who may have IVF differ by country.

England: NICE guideline NG257 (31 March 2026, replacing CG156) recommends offering an initial 3 full IVF cycles to women under 40 who meet its criteria, and 1 cycle at 40 or 41 (NICE). Local integrated care boards decide what is funded: the fertility regulator says some areas fund three attempts and others one or none, and 27% of UK IVF cycles were NHS-funded in 2022, down from 40% in 2012 (HFEA, HFEA key facts). The NHS patient page still uses the older age wording (NHS).

Ireland: the HSE funds 1 round of IVF or ICSI per couple through a regional fertility hub. The woman must be under 41 at referral, with a BMI between 18.5 and 30, and the couple must use their own eggs and sperm; single people and same-sex couples are not currently eligible (HSE).

Thailand limits IVF to legally married couples, according to a Bangkok clinic citing the 2015 assisted reproduction act (Genesis Fertility). The Japanese price is a university hospital's self-pay list, and the hospital adds inpatient fees, medicines and tests on top (Kyorin University Hospital).

How to compare IVF cycle prices

  • Check whether the medicines are in the price. Many clinics quote them separately because doses differ.
  • Ask whether ICSI, embryo freezing, storage and a frozen transfer are included or extra.
  • Ask how many monitoring scans you need at the clinic, and whether some can be done at home.
  • Ask for the clinic’s own success figures for your age group, and how they are counted.

Do not travel for an IVF cycle if

  • Anyone the destination’s law excludes. Thailand, for example, limits IVF to legally married couples, according to a Bangkok clinic.
  • People who have not had fertility tests at home: a clinic abroad will usually ask for them first.

Before you book

  • Check what your home health service funds first. NICE in England recommends up to three cycles under 40, but local health boards decide, and the HSE in Ireland funds one round for eligible couples.
  • Ask the clinic for a written plan with dates, medicines and every fee, and agree how embryos are stored if you do not use them all.

After you come home

  • Tell your GP if you are pregnant after treatment abroad, with the clinic’s report on the transfer.
  • Severe tummy pain, swelling or breathlessness after egg collection can be a reaction to the hormones and needs urgent care.

Bringing results home so your own doctor can use them is covered in how to bring your results home.

IVF abroad: questions

Where is an IVF cycle cheapest abroad?

Before flights, the lowest published prices we found are in Japan (about £1,230), Poland (about £1,670 to £2,960) and Turkey (about £2,510). The cheapest country is not always the cheapest trip: a short flight can matter more than the price difference.

How long is the wait for an IVF cycle on the NHS?

NHS England does not publish a waiting-time figure for this that we could use. Ask your GP or dentist what the NHS offers in your case.

How much does a private IVF cycle cost in the UK?

about £3,800 at the UK providers we checked, before any consultant fees they list separately.

What does the price of an IVF cycle usually include?

On this site the price should cover one IVF or ICSI cycle with your own eggs: monitoring, egg collection, lab work and one fresh embryo transfer. Medicines count as included only where the clinic says so. Check whether the medicines are in the price. Many clinics quote them separately because doses differ.

How long do I need to stay abroad for an IVF cycle?

About 2 to 3 weeks for a fresh cycle if you start the injections at the clinic; less if the clinic lets you start them at home and come for the last scans, egg collection and transfer. Ask the clinic for the schedule in writing before you book flights.
